As the world is embroiled in grief over the death of Queen Elizabeth II, it seemed cruel that some folks would also be interjecting shocking messages of accountability for how the monarch had ruled, at the same time many others were chosing to remember only the "rossy" aspects of the reign of this iconic queen of England. The news media and social media noted that some folks in Nigeria, India, Canada, and elsewhere, said that they are holding Queen Elizabeth accountable for certain thefts of ancestrial treasures, looting of natural resources, and in aiding and abetting genocide in Britain's former colonies, with policies which the Queen spearheaded from Buckingham Palace..
Queen Elizabeth II was a charming teenager when she began to acsend the throne of her ancestors, and therefore was able to win the love and admiration of even those whom her reign caused much harm. It is only fair to say that the young queen may have had no choice but to pursue those policies which she was adviced were in the best interests of her kingdom.
So when it came to pillaging natural resources in Asia and Africa, Queen Elizabeth did not think about the future implications of poverty and disease to the whole population of Asia and Africa, as long as Great Britain was positioned for better structure for growth, and more growth. When the entire Igbo population faced hunger and ethnic cleansing in Nigeria, Queen Elizabeth supported the then Nigerian military government with sophisticated weapons and military support without blinking an eye of concern for the death and malnutrition of hundreds of thousands of unarmed and innocent children. The stories have different legs too in India, and in Canada where the native Indians are asking for the return of diamonds stolen under the governments which were imposed from the monarchy in Great Britain.
So, when afflicted victims like Professor Uju Anya of Nigeria, speak up against their pains at the suffering which the Queen's legacy is still inflicting on their people, people like Jeff Bezos should have done a liitle homework to understand why such seemingly cruel reactions to the death of a well loved monarch could be warranted. For the sake of history, this period of the Queen's death begs for a balance of the accounts of the good deeds of Queen Elizabeth II and incidently, to indict her for the atrocities carried out around the world under her watch. War and genocide in any region of the world should attract the same condemnation like it is being hyped against Vladimir Putin of Russia today for invading Ukraine.
The nazis are persecuted till today for all their own atrocities, brutal world and African leaders like Charles Taylor are lanquishing in jail today as accountability for crimes that took place during their regime; and victims cannot assert their displeasure and wish ill to the head of a monarchy that could have helped, but instead turned a blind eye to genocide in Africa while they lead the world to remember only the genocide against the Jews?
Professor Uju Anya could have said nothing, or joined in trumpeting simple tidings like, How Many Movie Stars The Queen Has Met, or whatever. But unfortunately, that was not her own story. Her own story is the contrary and she was compelled to tell it. As it is being told about the weight of gold that is in the royal crown, or the billions of pounds that are stashed in the royal vaults, Professor Uju Anya has managed to dare you to imagine all those financial excesses at the expense
of who?
